I remember that my Port of Entry was Newark Airport, New Jersey, and that I had a four or five hour layover that got extended because the connecting flight was delayed.

I remember being exhausted and jet-lagged, and wanting to only to sleep.

I remember that I wore a tie-and-dye cotton Kurti with jeans pants. I also remember groggily overhearing a couple looking at me and using the word "Gypsy" several times.

I remember thinking, while the plane circled the airport before it landed, that the trucks and signboards were huge -- larger than any I'd seen before, and larger than what I thought I'd seen in the movies.

I remember the beauty of Syracuse summers and thinking that people took effort to enjoy every possible minute of it.
